The Bahamas

Immigration

The Bahamas is situated at a geographical crossroads between North, Central and South America. The northernmost Bahamian island is 60 miles from Palm Beach, Florida. Six hundred miles away, from the southernmost island on the Cay Sal Banks, on a clear night, you can see the lights of Cuba. It is also easily accessible from Europe and beyond. But more than a magnet because of its geography, The Bahamas’ history always attracted foreigners for economic, financial and lifestyle reasons.

The demand for foreign language skills and foreign expertise—now provided more and more by Bahamians—drew large numbers of ex-pats to the country’s shores to work in professional capacities in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

The tax-free environment continues to draw those who want to call The Bahamas home, even if a second, third or fourth home. Businesses and institutions continue to expand to meet international demand while many new developments seek qualified expatriates to carry out projects when needed.

Currently, the major trend is to welcome foreigners as leisure residents or as major investors, moreso than as part of the skilled workforce. Almost every major resort in the country, including in the Family Islands, is owned by or was conceived by a foreign entity, some in a joint venture with Bahamian companies. The country officially welcomes those from abroad. In reality, legislation and policy make it possible, though not automatic to achieve the desired status.

Long-term or short-term, matters related to Immigration can be of utmost importance. Needs often require addressing with urgency.
